To keep your carpet looking beautiful for its intended life it must be regularly maintained. The best thing you can do to keep your carpet from wearing and looking dingy is to vacuum often. Carpet acts like a giant air filter in your home, trapping dust, dirt, pollens and dander down in the fibers where you aren’t breathing them. Soil can be very abrasive to carpet fibers so it must be removed with frequent, thorough vacuuming.
Food and drink spills must be wiped up promptly. If something gets spilled that won’t clean up with plain water, don’t reach for your favorite spot remover. Just because it worked on the last spill doesn’t mean it will work on this one. Different stains need different cleaners to remove them properly. If your spotter doesn’t work it could very well set in the stain. The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) has a great spot removal guide on their website. Most effective spot removers are common household items like vinegar or ammonia. Some soils can’t be removed by vacuuming or spot removal. Cooking oils float through the air and land on the carpet. Grease and tar can be brought in from the roads. And some spot removers can leave behind a soapy residue that attracts more soil. This is when it’s time to call in the pros.
When your carpet begins to look dingy it’s time for professional cleaning. Advanced Carpet Care uses the method most recommended by the major carpet manufacturers. Hot water extraction or “steam cleaning” gets your carpet deep down clean. Some dry cleaning methods only clean the top of the fibers and leaves soil and spills at the base of the fibers. Even some steam cleaners don’t take the time to properly rinse out their cleaning solutions which can make your carpet resoil faster.
